ATV v UTV

If you are planning to purchase an off-roading vehicle, you’ll probably come across two of the most popular options, All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs). Take a look at various features of both off-roading vehicles to choose a suitable option.

Size

One of the key points of difference between ATVs and UTVs is the size. ATVs are typically much smaller than UTVs. If you have limited garage space, then an ATV is probably the better choice. Apart from storage, the size also makes a difference in the riding style. ATVs are ideal machines for those seeking adrenaline-filled adventures. On the other hand, if you prefer riding with others and prioritize safety, then UTVs make a better option.

Cost

Before you start shopping for off-roading vehicles, it’s important to set a budget. When you are calculating the budget, it would be best to account for safety gear such as helmets, riding boots, protective clothing, gloves and so on. These expenses may not seem like a lot in comparison to the cost of an off-roading vehicle. However, you will end up exceeding your budget if you overlook these expenses.

While ATVs, as well as UTVs, don’t come cheap, the former is cheaper than the latter. ATVs will likely cost you less than a UTV. In addition to the vehicle, you may also have to spend on modifications to ensure optimal performance. UTVs modifications, such as speciality lighting or power steering, are usually on the expensive side.

Functionality

The functionality of the vehicle is a significant factor to consider when comparing ATVs and UTVs. Are you looking forward to solo adventures through rough terrains? If that’s the case, the ATVs will serve your purpose. On the flip side, UTVs are better suited for riders looking to haul people as well as gear. You can also utilize UTVs for a wide range of farm work, including raking, plowing, harrowing, building fences, transporting supplies and more. With the right attachments, ATVs also come in handy for winching, hunting, plowing, salt spreading and other tasks.

Seating Capacity

ATVs are typically suitable for one rider at a time unless they are specifically designed to carry two passengers. Therefore, if you are a solo rider looking to explore by yourself, ATVs should be your go-to vehicle. However, if you want to ride with passengers as well as need cargo space, UTVs promise extra space and seating capacity.

Agility & Maneuverability

As previously mentioned, ATVs are compact and smaller than most UTVs. This implies you can easily maneuver these agile vehicles. ATVs are quite easy to ride, especially if you have experience riding snowmobiles or motorcycles. If you are looking forward to exploring rough and challenging terrain, think about getting an ATV. In comparison, UTVs don’t offer as much flexibility when it comes to maneuverability.

Safety

UTVs usually come with built-in seat belts and protective bars to safeguard you and other passengers in case of a rollover. As far as ATVs are concerned, you are required to wear protective riding gear to ensure your safety.
